Training Update
After leaving training for a nearly a year after my knee operation 20th April 2008) I gradually started training back in late (Oct) 2008 with a gentle regime, I started with gym work initially, some cycling, rowing and cross trainer and some light weights.
After Sempai Eugene confirmed a date for his Shodan-Ho grading it was time to step up my training, so the gym work was upped from twice a week to tree times a week and I was running in Cassiobury Park Wednesdays & Sundays. I was also back on the mat basic throws & fitness testing with everyone on the mat.
After Sempai Eugene's grading (15th Feb 2009) I continued with my training but I replaced the four mile run around Cassiobury with a six mile run around Borehamwood & Radlett with Sempai Peter (O.M.G. Shenly Hill, a new breed of widowmaker...what a killer) The cold winter air was impeading my breathing as it had an immediate impact with my Asthma but I could feel a gradual improvement.
As the months progressed I could feel myself getting lighter & fitter, everything was playing its part, the Gym three times a week, the six miler and the tatami twice a week coupled with a much healthier diet there was a huge change, the more I did the more I wanted to do, so I pushed myself.
Sempai Peter was keeping track of the timings for the six miler and each run was an effort to beat the last time. I also pushed myself in the gym longer on the treadmill, further with the rowing & cycling, harder on the stepper, more weights on the leg press and bench press everything was going great until CRUNCH...whilst in the gym one morning, on the Leg Extensions...it wasn't a massive pain but something didn't feel quite right.
You know the saying, "Carry on Regardless" so I did but at what cost? I am not a natural runner, I'm the wrong build and I just don't enjoy it but it has to be done for lots of reasons. I had often thought "I can't do this today" however, I had always pushed through what ever self imposed barrier was in my way either mental or physical BUT it was whilst out on a run one morning with Sempai Peter, we had just started and I felt an excruciating pain shoot up my leg and for the first time I had to say to Sempai Peter "I can't do this today" so we turned back.....I was gutted.
I let it go and continued with my gym training but was becoming more and more demoralised as during each training session it felt like there was a red hot poker being inserted into my knee, the summer holidays were upon us and my training regime eased dramatically.
Finally my knee got so bad that it would inflame whilst walking the dog...It was time to see the Doctor. I was referred to the surgeon and it's back under the knife for some corrective surgery, the plan is to remove an "aggravated" bolt from my knee, So nearly two years to the day I will be back in hospital Friday 23rd April.
I may me down for the moment but I'm certainly not out, I have some challenges later in the year, the "Para10" bergen march in Spetember, Sempai Peter's Black belt grading in November, in the distant future there are plans for another Shodan-Ho grading and another Shodan grading as well as plans for my Sandan grading...watch this space for more updates.
